Even the Pope Agreed
'If anyone makes the assistance of grace [to believe the gospel] depend on the humility or obedience of man and does not agree that it is a gift of grace itself that we are obedient and humble, he contradicts the Apostle who says, "What have you that you did not receive?" (1 Cor. 4:7), and, "But by the grace of God I am what I am" (1 Cor. 15:10).'

Great quote! How many of today's Roman Catholics would agree?
Derek,
Funnily enough and to be fair I'd have to say that the Catholic theologians, when pressed, would still agree. They are, in this area at least, ahead of a lot of modern so-called evangelicalism, which is now almost unashamedly Pelagian in a lot of its views - published statements of faith notwithstanding.
However, the average Catholic in the pew, because of the actual teachings of the church is probably as Pelagian in outlook as the average evangelical is fast becoming. That's because Pelagianism is the natural philosophy of mankind and, absent saving faith, is what will always bleed through any profession to the contrary.
My harshness is now showing through. :-)

Harsh, yes, but not too harsh. Truth is occasionally abrasive, and typically exclusive. I guess I should have asked, "How many of today's Evangelicals would agree?"
The visible church is going the way of Cain en masse.
May God have mercy on us.
Derek,
Speaking of the way of Cain, I am planning on blogging a sermon next Sunday comparing the lines of Cain and Seth. It will be 40 minutes of pure fun ;-)
Blessings,
Tony
