Sermon of the Week
Don Carson - Revelation 12
The sermon of the week this week is again not a true sermon, but the subject matter has relevance for the present study in Revelation. It is an address given to the Mars Hill (Seattle) church during a conference. The speaker is Don Carson, who I like for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that he is a fellow Canuck. Mark another one up for the frigid north!
But in all seriousness, Dr. Carson is a balanced and thoughtful Reformed Christian. Here, he throws some light on the imagery of the Hebrew apocalyptic genre that is a welcome relief to me from the hyper-dispensationalism of some Southern Baptist fundamentalist teachers to whom I was exposed early on in my Christian life.
He has some interesting things to say about the timing and nature of Satan's fall from heaven. And there is a strong, but not morbid, acknowledgment of the inevitability of suffering for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Finally - though this is not a sermon proper you will find both law and gospel presented in it. And, while Dr. Carson makes a sometimes amusing and affectedly charming presentation, there is no doubt that he is deadly serious about the issues.
