Sermon of the Week
Mystery: Solved

As long as I have access to Losardo's stuff I may never again have to get personally polemical! And he does it in so much better a way than I would, with more gentleness and respect.

This one is about Ephesians 3: 3-6 and in it he summarizes much of the book of Ephesians that precedes the text. In doing so he effortlessly (and appropriately) takes swipes at paganism, atheism, Roman Catholicism, Arminianism, Charismatism, pragmatism, mysticism and probably a whole bunch of stuff I have missed here.

But it is all done in the context of Paul's gospel and its proper presentation both in Paul's historical milieu, and in our own. Solid food here! Give it a listen...

Mystery: Solved - Joseph Losardo

Eph 3:1-6 For this reason I, Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles— 2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you, 3 how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. 4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit. 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Tony,

I'm ironing clothes for church and listening to this, and haven't gotten too far yet, but I am totally stoked with his definition of mystery as something that "could not be known apart from divine revelation." Bingo! It's refreshing to hear an alternative to the oft repeated but mistakenly half-true definition typically articulated as "something once hidden, now revealed," which certainly doesn't fit the context in I Cor. 13 or even here in Ephesians 3.

I don't know where he will go from there, but so far I'm on board.

Derek,

While I'm glad you are stoked by this one I can't help being a bit offended that yesterday's "The English are Best" didn't garner a similar reaction. I'll put it down to you being a foreigner.

Enjoy church.

Blessings,

Tony
