Great Hymns from Saints in Glory
We stand on the shoulders of giants who considered themselves to be pygmies. That was their greatness - that they let the unsurpassing greatness of Christ be manifested in the world through them. Their hearts and their eyes were all for Him. Their freedom was found in their slavery to Christ. It is a freedom that the world cannot know.
Today, the church is under relentless attack. While threats from without are often cathartic for her, the church is less alert for threats from within. The evil foe still seeks to work us woe. But in the Laodicea of "established" Christendom he is often in the seminary, the pulpit and the pew. And one of his greatest triumphs is the erosion of Word-based worship. Those saints who are now in glory have left us a legacy of words that they have lived out in Christ, and have shown Him worthy by their victory, through sharing in His sufferings.
Once in a while I plan on blogging a great hymn from the past. I might even comment on how it moves me. The first in this series is in the very next post (see below). Any one who knows anything about Luther's life must realize the tribulation, soul-searching and prayer that were the fertile soil in which the beautiful and powerful truths expressed in "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" (see below) grew to fruition.
